Dumping at a landfill site in New Orleans East would cease until tests are conducted to determine if the site has dumped any hazardous materials, Waste Management officials announced Wednesday.

On Tuesday, the Louisiana Environmental Action Network came to the site, located in the 16400 block of Chef Menteur Highway, to test for toxins but was turned away. Site managers said the group was supposed to submit testing guidelines by Friday, but did not do so until Tuesday.

"They've been knowing for quite some time how we exactly intended to test the landfill," said Joel Waltzer, a LEAN spokesman.

Waste Management officials also said the site already passed six inspections since they began accepting storm debris on April 20, and that by delaying the reopening of the site, the community activist group has slowed recovery efforts.

Waltzer insists recovery efforts have not been delayed, only Waste Management's ability to make money.
