A controversial proposal to put a landfill in New Orleans East received a green light from the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality.

The Chef Menteur C and D Disposal will accept hurricane related debris and demolition debris.

The DEQ said it has made sure all steps have been taken to protect the environment and human health.

City council woman Cynthia Willard-Lewis, who represents the area, said she was extremely disappointed that the DEQ made the decision without holding a public hearing.
