ORLEANS -- The local Vietnamese
community is upset over a proposed
landfill set to open right in their
backyard.
Community leaders said the landfill could cause contamination to a canal in their area which serves as the main water source for many of their gardens.
Mayor Ray Nagin signed an executive order for the disposal plant along Chef Menteur Highway. The landfill is intended to be used to get rid of the massive amount of debris left behind by Hurricane Katrina. The Vietnamese community has asked
Nagin to rescind the order to open the
operation.
