| Residents of New Orleans East thought
they had a deal. 24 hours after Mayor Nagin said he
would shut down the Waste Management dump off Chef
Highway, dumping was taking place non-stop Thursday.
Waste Management says it hasn't gotten the
paperwork...and Nagin says it's on it's way.
But residents, including Father Vien Nguyen say
they took the mayor at his word.
They now want a 7 day moratorium against dumping.
If and when the dump closes down...the mayor
agreed to study the waste to see if it's toxic. He
also got neighborhood groups and the SCLC to agree
to lobby for permission to haul waste at night...to
other dumps in West Jefferson Parish.
The mayor's office says the order to shut down
the landfill was hand-delivered. A spokesman for
Waste Management says they hadn't received it as of
Wednesday night.
