| For three hours Wednesday there was no
let up. Over 200 protesters shouting at City Hall
trying to block a landfill in New Orleans east.
They say it's too close to the Village De L'est
Subdivision which they have fought to rebuild.
After a one hour closed door meeting with the
community priest...and the head of theSCLC...Mayor
Ray Nagin came down to talk with the protesters.
He drew cheers when he told them he would shut
down the landfill for 72 hours...while two areas are
explored.
He will now examine whether waste being dumped
is toxic. He also asked that the group help him
lobby the Army Corps of Engineers to allow trash to
be hauled at night to landfills outside the area.
