The New Orleans East landfill that pitted city
council members against Mayor Nagin will be opening.
DEQ gave the temporary Chef Menteur dump final
approval Thursday, despite protests by people who
will live near it. The landfill will be used for
construction and demolition debris and DEQ says it's
non-hazardous, but many people in the Village D'lest
community are not happy about it and say they will
continue to fight. The site is authorized to accept
6.5 million cubic yards of debris over the next 12
to 14 months from Orleans, St. Bernard and St.
Tammany parishes.
