Vietnamese communits fights proposed landfill

April 3, 2006, 5:27 PM CDT

NEW ORLEANS, LA — Residents of The Mary Queen of Vietnam community are upset a landfill is proposed for New Orleans East and they had no say in it.

Mayor Ray Nagin signed an executive order two months ago creating this construction and demolition debris landfill.

Nagin said it's needed because the old Gentilly landfill could close at anytime.

The assistant Secretary of the Department of Enviornmental Quality, Chuck Brown said no decision has been made.

Members put their Council representative on the hot seat at a public hearing Monday morning.

Cynthia Willard-Lewis told the group she and the council didn't have anything to do with the executive order.

She said the Mayor acted on his own without advising the Council.

Lewis said she will introduce a resoultion asking the Mayor to rescind the executive order.
